Cricket in terms of a very long family board game
Cricket is just a very long board game where the players have to stand in the sunshine for several days in a row.
Think of the cricket pitch like a giant board that takes up the whole garden. The two teams take turns being the ones who try to score points by hitting a ball, and the ones who try to stop them. It is exactly like when you and your cousins argue over who gets to move the counter first, except here you have to wear special white clothes and wait hours for a snack break. You move back and forth across the grass instead of around a square, but the goal is still to get the highest score before your tea time arrives.
The game is famous for being very slow, just like that rainy afternoon when the dice rolled under the sofa and nobody could find it. Sometimes the game goes on for five whole days, which is much longer than a game of Snakes and Ladders before someone knocks the board over. The players have to be very patient and stay calm, even when the sun is hot or the grass is itchy. They keep count of every single run like you count your plastic tokens, hoping they do not lose them all before the end.
It is a funny way to play because the game does not finish just because everyone is tired. You have to wait until all the turns are finished and the numbers are added up on the big scoreboard. It feels like a never ending Sunday at Grandma's house, where the tea is always hot and the game is always moving just a little bit too slowly for you to win.
Where the analogy breaks downCricket players do not actually have a set number of squares to jump over to win the game.
