Going to jail in Monopoly in terms of a school detention
Going to jail in Monopoly is just like being sent to the headteacher for running in the corridor.
In the game, you land on a special square that tells you to go straight to jail without passing go. This is just like when you are talking while the teacher is reading a story and you have to sit on the quiet chair. You stay there while your friends keep playing and having fun moving their colourful counters around the board. You are stuck in a corner, waiting until you can roll a double or pay a little fine to come back out.
Being stuck in jail feels very long when everyone else is buying hotels and getting rich. You feel a bit sad while you watch your brother get all the best property cards and build big houses. You have to wait for your turn to roll the dice and hope for a lucky number. It is not very fair, but it is just one of those rules you have to follow if you want to keep playing the game until the end.
Eventually, you get to leave your little square and start moving around the board again. You might even land on a space that lets you collect money from the bank. It feels like the bell ringing to tell you that playtime has started again. You are back in the game and ready to see who wins.
Where the analogy breaks downIn jail, you might actually be allowed to keep collecting rent from your properties, whereas in detention you certainly do not get to keep earning stickers.
