The Golgi apparatus in terms of a sorting office
The Golgi apparatus is just like the busy back room of your local post office where all the parcels go to be sorted.
Inside a tiny cell, there are lots of little things called proteins that need to go to special places to help you grow. These proteins are like small birthday presents that your friends have sent you in the post. Before they can be delivered to the right house, they arrive at the Golgi apparatus, which works exactly like the back room of a sorting office. The staff there check the address on every parcel to make sure it is heading to the right room in your body.
The Golgi apparatus has many flat stacks that look like a neat pile of pancakes or a row of envelopes waiting to be sent. It adds little stamps or labels to the presents so your body knows exactly where they belong. If a present is a new toy for your bedroom, the office puts a special sticker on it so it does not end up in the bin by mistake. It keeps everything moving quickly so your body has all the parts it needs to stay happy and healthy.
Sometimes, the sorting office packs the presents into tiny bubbles called vesicles. These bubbles are like small, round delivery vans that carry the packages to the very edge of the cell. Once the van reaches the right spot, it pops open and lets the present go out to do its job. It is a very busy place, but it never gets tired of making sure your body gets its post on time.
Where the analogy breaks downThe Golgi apparatus does not actually employ any grumpy postmen who take long tea breaks.
