How a fridge keeps things cold in terms of someone bailing water out of a leaky boat
A fridge is just like a person working really hard to scoop water out of a leaky boat so it does not sink.
The boat has a tiny hole in the bottom where the warm air from your kitchen keeps sneaking inside. This warm air is just like the water splashing into your boat. If you did not do anything, your boat would fill up and your lovely ice lollies would turn into sticky puddles. You have to keep scooping it out to stay dry.
Inside the fridge walls, there is a special liquid that acts like your bucket. It runs around the inside, picking up all the heat from your milk and your cheese. It carries that heat away from your food, just like you carry the water to the side of the boat to toss it overboard. The fridge keeps working all day and all night so you never have to worry about your snacks.
The motor at the back is your tired arms working to push the heat out into the kitchen. It hums along, dumping the heat outside, just like you dump the water into the sea. Once the heat is gone, your fridge stays nice and chilly, perfect for a cold glass of juice. It is a very busy boat, but it keeps your lunch perfectly frosty and fresh.
Where the analogy breaks downA fridge creates a cycle where the heat is released outside the box, whereas the water in a boat is dumped away from the vessel forever.
