How a microwave oven works in terms of a crowd at a football match jumping up and down
Have you ever wondered why your popcorn pops inside a microwave?
A microwave is just like a big football stadium where all the little water molecules inside your food are the fans. When you press the start button, an invisible beam of energy runs onto the pitch like a whistle blowing for kick off. The molecules start jumping up and down really fast because they are excited, just like fans cheering for a goal.
As they jump and bump into each other, they get very hot and tired, which is called friction. This heat spreads through the rest of the food to make it warm, just like the warmth of a crowd huddling together in the stands. It happens very quickly because there are millions of these little fans bumping into each other all at the same time.
Some parts of the food might stay cold if the fans are sitting in a quiet corner where the energy beam cannot reach them properly. This is why we have a spinning plate, so every single molecule gets a turn to jump up and down in the middle of the excitement. Once the timer dings, the crowd stops jumping, the whistle blows, and your dinner is ready to eat.
Where the analogy breaks downThe microwave energy does not actually make the molecules happy, and food does not get warmer because it is having fun.
