How bees make honey in terms of a busy open-plan office
Do you know that a beehive is just a very busy office where everyone is working hard to make some sweet honey?
The worker bees are like office staff who have to fly out to find flowers. They visit lots of flowers to collect a sugary juice called nectar. Back at the hive, they pass this juice to their friends. They act just like busy colleagues sharing notes by a water cooler, but instead of chatting about the weekend, they are busy turning the nectar into thick honey.
The bees have to work together to keep the hive cool. They flap their wings very fast to move the air around. This is just like everyone in an office turning on the fans when the room gets too hot. By moving the air, they help the honey get nice and thick. It is a big team effort to make sure the food stays perfect for the winter months.
Once the honey is ready, the bees store it in little wax rooms that look like a honeycomb. These rooms are like neat little filing cabinets. They seal each room with a tiny lid of wax to keep the honey fresh. It is a very tidy way to keep everything organised until they get hungry. It really is a lot of work to make a tiny pot of honey.
