Promotion and relegation in terms of a school league table
Did you know that playing football is just like the end of the school year when the teacher moves pupils between different classrooms?
In football, every team wants to be in the very best class, which is called the Premier League. If a team plays really well and earns lots of points by winning games, they get a gold star and move up to a better classroom next year. This is called promotion, and it is just like when you work hard on your reading and writing to move into a higher group where the books are a little bit longer.
But sometimes, a team has a bad season and does not win enough games. They end up at the bottom of the league table, which means they have to move down to a different room. This is called relegation. It is just like if a teacher decided you needed to spend more time in a room with younger children to practice your basics again. The teams hate this because the new room is not as famous and they do not get to play against the champions anymore.
Every team tries their hardest to stay in the top room so they can keep playing the best players. They run fast and kick the ball with all their might just to stay in the same seat. It is a very busy race that lasts all year, ending only when the final whistle blows and the teacher checks the final marks.
Where the analogy breaks downA school does not have a billionaire owner who can buy five new star students to fix the class results in January.
