Food chains in terms of pass the parcel
A food chain is just like a game of pass the parcel where the prize is a very messy lunch.
In this game, the sun gives energy to the grass, which is like the first person holding the parcel. The grass grows big and strong, then a little bunny comes along and takes the parcel by eating the grass. The energy from the sun is now inside the bunny, just like the gift hidden inside the paper. The bunny is happy, but he does not know that a fox is waiting for his turn to play.
When the fox catches the bunny, he takes the parcel to get the energy for himself. The fox is now the one holding the gift, and he uses that energy to run around and play in the woods. Every animal in the woods is part of the circle, waiting to take the parcel when the music stops. It is a long game that never really ends, and nobody ever gets to take the prize home to keep forever.
If you look closely, you can see the parcel moving from the plants, to the small animals, and finally to the big ones at the end. Everyone gets a little bit of the energy, but most of it gets used up just by running, jumping, and playing tag. By the time the parcel reaches the very last player, there is not much left, but the game is still the most important part of life in the garden.
Where the analogy breaks downIn pass the parcel, the gift stays the same, but in a food chain, the energy gets smaller each time it is passed on.
